Course Objective
To provide practical experience in the operation and testing of synchronous and induction machines.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
Part A — Induction Machines: load test on a 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor; load test on a 3-phase slip-ring induction motor; no-load and blocked-rotor tests on a 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor; no-load/blocked-rotor or load tests on a 3-phase pole-changing induction motor; variation of starting torque with rotor resistance in 3-phase slip-ring induction motor; brake test on 1-phase induction motor; no-load and blocked-rotor tests on 1-phase induction motor; 3-phase induction machine working as motor and generator; speed control of 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor using V/f technique. Part B — Synchronous Machines: voltage regulation of 3-phase synchronous generator by EMF method, direct loading, and Potier method; V-curves and inverted V-curves of synchronous machines; slip test on 3-phase salient-pole synchronous machines. A minimum of 12 experiments are mandatory out of the 14 listed.
Course Outcomes
- CO1Analyze the performance of 3-phase squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors at different loads.
- CO2Analyze the performance of line excited induction machine working in motoring and generating modes.
- CO3Apply V/f control techniques for the speed control of 3-phase induction motors.
- CO4Determine the voltage regulation of 3-phase cylindrical rotor type and salient pole type synchronous generators.
- CO5Construct V and inverted V curves of synchronous machines at constant load.
- CO6Compute the efficiency of a single-phase induction motor at a specified load.
