NEET 2026 Overview
NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single national-level entrance exam for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH admissions in India, conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). NEET 2026 will follow the syllabus based on Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT textbooks.
The exam consists of 180 questions (45 each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology) for a total of 720 marks. Each correct answer fetches +4 marks and each incorrect answer carries −1 mark. The exam duration is 3 hours 20 minutes.
NEET 2026 Physics Syllabus
Class 11 Physics topics: Physical World and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body, Gravitation, Properties of Bulk Matter, Thermodynamics, Behaviour of Perfect Gases and Kinetic Theory, Oscillations and Waves.
Class 12 Physics topics: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices.
NEET 2026 Chemistry Syllabus
Class 11 Chemistry topics: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, States of Matter (Gases and Liquids), Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Some p-Block Elements, Organic Chemistry (Basic Principles and Techniques), Hydrocarbons, Environmental Chemistry.
Class 12 Chemistry topics: Solid State, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements, p-Block Elements, d- and f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, Biomolecules, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life.
NEET 2026 Biology Syllabus (Botany + Zoology)
Class 11 Biology topics: Diversity in Living World, Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants, Cell Structure and Function, Plant Physiology, Human Physiology.
Class 12 Biology topics: Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology and Human Welfare, Biotechnology and Its Applications, Ecology and Environment.
Biology carries 360 out of 720 marks (50% of the paper), making it the highest-weightage subject in NEET. Focus on NCERT line by line — nearly 80–90% of NEET Biology questions are directly from NCERT.
NEET 2026 Exam Pattern
Total marks: 720. Total questions: 180 (45 per subject × 4 subjects). Marking scheme: +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted. Exam duration: 200 minutes (3 hours 20 minutes). Mode: Pen and paper (OMR sheet). Language: 13 languages including English, Hindi, and regional languages.
From 2024 onwards, each subject has Section A (35 compulsory questions) and Section B (15 questions, attempt any 10). This gives candidates flexibility in Section B.
High-Weightage Chapters for NEET 2026
Physics: Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy) and Modern Physics (Atoms, Nuclei, Semiconductors) together contribute 40–50% of Physics marks. Electrostatics and Current Electricity are also high-weightage.
Chemistry: Organic Chemistry is the highest-scoring area — Haloalkanes, Carbonyl Compounds, Amines and Biomolecules together contribute ~30% of Chemistry marks. Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Chemical Kinetics, Electrochemistry) and Coordination Compounds are also important.
Biology: Genetics & Evolution, Human Physiology and Ecology are the top three areas. Genetics alone (including Molecular Biology) can contribute 25–30 questions across Botany and Zoology.
NEET 2026 Preparation Tips
Start with NCERT: Every Biology question and most Chemistry questions are directly from NCERT. Read NCERT Biology (Class 11 and 12) at least 4–5 times before the exam.
Physics strategy: Focus on conceptual clarity and formula-based numericals. NEET Physics is less calculation-heavy than JEE but requires strong conceptual understanding of optics, electricity and mechanics.
Mock tests: Start full-length mock tests at least 3 months before the exam. Analyse every mistake and revisit weak chapters. Time yourself strictly to build exam temperament.
Revision schedule: Create a formula sheet and important reactions/diagrams sheet for last-minute revision. Spend the final 2 weeks on revision and mock tests, not on new topics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has the NEET 2026 syllabus been reduced?
NTA revised the NEET syllabus in 2024, removing certain topics that were not part of NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks. The 2026 syllabus follows this revised pattern. Always verify the official NTA notification at nta.ac.in for the most current syllabus before your exam.
Is NCERT enough for NEET 2026?
For Biology, NCERT is almost sufficient — 85–90% of questions come directly from NCERT text and diagrams. For Chemistry, NCERT covers theory well but you need additional practice books for numericals. For Physics, NCERT concepts need to be supplemented with a problem-solving book like DC Pandey or HC Verma.
How many questions come from Class 11 vs Class 12 in NEET?
Typically 40–45% of NEET questions are from Class 11 and 55–60% from Class 12. In Biology, Class 12 (Genetics, Reproduction, Biotechnology, Ecology) tends to have slightly more questions. Do not neglect Class 11 — it is the foundation for Class 12 concepts.
What is a good NEET score to get into a government medical college?
A score of 600+ (out of 720) is generally considered competitive for government MBBS seats via the state quota. For All India Quota (AIQ) top government colleges, scores of 650+ are typically needed. Cutoffs vary by state, category and year — always check the latest official counselling data.
