NEET Overview and Scoring Strategy

NEET-UG tests Physics (45Q, 180 marks), Chemistry (45Q, 180 marks) and Biology — Botany (45Q, 180 marks) + Zoology (45Q, 180 marks). Total: 720 marks. Marking: +4 correct, −1 wrong.

To score 600+, aim for: Biology 320+ (80%), Chemistry 140+ (78%), Physics 140+ (78%). Biology is your biggest lever — it carries 50% of total marks and has the highest accuracy potential since most questions come directly from NCERT.

Common mistake: Spending too much time on Physics at the cost of Biology. Most students who score 650+ have extremely high Biology accuracy (90%+).

Biology Preparation Strategy (Most Important)

Biology carries 360 marks — the highest of any subject. 85–90% of NEET Biology questions come directly from NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology textbooks.

Read NCERT thoroughly: Every line, every diagram, every table, every example in NCERT Biology is fair game for NEET. Read NCERT Biology at least 4–5 times before the exam. Highlight key terms on first read, then test yourself on later reads.

Diagrams: Reproduce every important diagram from memory — cell structure, mitosis, meiosis, human heart, kidney, eye, ear, digestive system, photosynthesis pathway, nitrogen cycle. NEET asks diagram-based questions every year.

High-weightage chapters: Genetics and Evolution (15–18 questions typically), Human Physiology (12–15 questions), Cell Biology (8–10 questions), Ecology (10–12 questions), Reproduction (8–10 questions). Together these contribute 70% of Biology marks.

Best books: NCERT Biology Class 11 and 12 (primary), Trueman's Objective Biology (for MCQ practice), MTG Fingertips Biology (excellent for quick revision).

Chemistry Preparation Strategy

NEET Chemistry is divided into Physical, Organic and Inorganic — each typically contributing 15 questions.

Organic Chemistry: Understanding reaction mechanisms > memorising reactions. Focus on: Nomenclature, General Organic Chemistry (GOC), Haloalkanes, Alcohols, Aldehydes/Ketones, Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Biomolecules, Polymers. NCERT Organic is sufficient for most questions.

Physical Chemistry: Numericals-based. Practice Chemical Equilibrium, Mole Concept, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Solutions thoroughly. Use NCERT solved examples + past NEET papers.

Inorganic Chemistry: Almost 100% NCERT. Read p-block, d-block, s-block and coordination compounds from NCERT carefully. Periodic table trends are frequently tested.

Best books: NCERT Chemistry Class 11 and 12 (primary), P Bahadur for Physical Chemistry numericals, VK Jaiswal for Inorganic MCQ practice.

Physics Preparation Strategy

NEET Physics is the subject most students struggle with. It requires conceptual understanding + formula application, unlike Biology (which is largely reading-based).

Focus on concepts, not just formulas: Understanding why a formula works helps you apply it in unfamiliar situations. NEET Physics often presents real-life scenarios — map the scenario to the right formula.

High-weightage topics: Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Rotational Motion — 8–10 questions), Electrostatics + Current Electricity (5–7 questions), Modern Physics (Atoms, Nuclei, Semiconductors — 5–6 questions), Optics (3–4 questions), Thermodynamics + Kinetic Theory (3–4 questions).

Best books: NCERT Physics Class 11 and 12 (mandatory), DC Pandey for NEET-level problem sets, previous year NEET papers (most important source).

Mock Tests and Last-Month Strategy

Start full-length mock tests 3–4 months before NEET. Aim for 2–3 full mocks per week in the last 2 months. Use NTA's official NEET mock test platform and Allen/Aakash/PW test series.

Previous year papers: Solving the last 10 years of NEET papers is the single most effective preparation activity. NEET repeats concepts and even near-identical questions. NCERT questions from previous years appear every year.

Last month strategy: Do not start new topics. Only revise — NCERT Biology line by line, formula sheets for Physics, reaction summary sheets for Organic Chemistry. Give 1 mock test every day. Analyse mistakes the same evening.

Exam day tips: Attempt Biology first (Section B Botany + Zoology) — your strongest subject first builds confidence. Skip difficult Physics questions and return to them. Never guess unless you can eliminate 2 options — the −1 penalty is real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I crack NEET in 6 months?

Yes, if you have strong Class 11 and 12 foundations. A student who has studied seriously in Class 11–12 can crack NEET in an intensive 6-month preparation. Focus: Biology (read NCERT 3–4 times), Chemistry (NCERT + 500 MCQs per chapter), Physics (conceptual revision + past papers). Give a mock test every 3 days.

How many hours of study per day for NEET?

8–10 hours of focused study per day is the standard recommendation during NEET preparation. Quality matters more than hours — 6 hours of concentrated study beats 12 hours of distracted study. Ensure 7–8 hours of sleep and at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily to maintain cognitive performance.

Is NCERT enough for NEET Biology?

For scoring 300–330 out of 360 in Biology, NCERT is sufficient. For 340+, you may need additional reference books for MCQ practice and previous year questions. However, do not move to reference books without thoroughly mastering NCERT first — most students who fail NEET Biology do so because they haven't read NCERT carefully, not because they lack reference books.

What is the cut-off score for MBBS in government colleges via NEET?

For government medical colleges via AIQ (All India Quota), the general category cutoff for top government colleges (AIIMS Delhi, JIPMER) is typically 700+. For other government medical colleges, scores of 550–650 are usually needed. State quota cutoffs vary significantly by state. Always check the official NMC / MCC counselling data for the most current cutoffs.
