JEE Main 2026 Overview

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is conducted by NTA for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced (for IIT admissions). JEE Main 2026 will be held in two sessions — typically January and April — with the best score considered for ranking.

The Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 90 questions: 30 each from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject has 20 MCQs and 10 numerical-type questions (attempt any 5). Total marks: 300. Marking: +4 for MCQ correct, −1 for MCQ incorrect; +4 for numerical correct, no negative for numericals.

JEE Main 2026 Physics Syllabus

Section A — Theory: Physics and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Oscillations and Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices.

Section B — Experimental Skills: Vernier calliper, screw gauge, simple pendulum, Ohm's law, meter bridge, potentiometer and other lab-based practicals. These are tested as theory questions about the experiment.

JEE Main 2026 Chemistry Syllabus

Physical Chemistry: Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry, States of Matter, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry.

Inorganic Chemistry: Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, p-Block Elements, d- and f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Environmental Chemistry.

Organic Chemistry: Purification and Characterisation, Basic Principles, Hydrocarbons, Organic Compounds with Halogens, Oxygen, Nitrogen; Polymers, Biomolecules, Chemistry in Everyday Life, Principles of Practical Chemistry.

JEE Main 2026 Mathematics Syllabus

Sets, Relations and Functions, Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations, Matrices and Determinants, Permutations and Combinations, Mathematical Induction, Binomial Theorem, Sequences and Series, Limit, Continuity and Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conic Sections), Three Dimensional Geometry, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, Mathematical Reasoning.

Calculus (Differential + Integral) is typically the highest-weightage area in JEE Main Maths, followed by Algebra (Matrices, Determinants, Complex Numbers) and Coordinate Geometry.

High-Weightage Chapters in JEE Main

Physics: Electrostatics and Current Electricity (6–8 questions combined), Optics (3–4 questions), Modern Physics (Atoms, Nuclei, Semiconductors — 3–4 questions), and Mechanics (Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Energy — 4–5 questions). These chapters account for roughly 60–70% of Physics marks.

Chemistry: Organic Chemistry consistently contributes 10–12 questions in JEE Main. Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Chemical Kinetics, Electrochemistry) adds 6–8 questions. Coordination Compounds alone often contributes 1–2 questions.

Mathematics: Calculus (Limits, Differentiation, Integration) is worth 8–10 questions. Algebra (Complex Numbers, Matrices, P&C) contributes another 6–8. Coordinate Geometry (Circles, Conics) adds 4–5 questions.

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced

JEE Main is the gateway to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, and the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is the gateway to IITs and is considered significantly harder.

JEE Main tests conceptual understanding and speed with standard difficulty. JEE Advanced tests deep problem-solving and multi-concept integration. A student targeting IITs needs to go beyond the JEE Main syllabus in terms of problem difficulty, though the syllabus is the same.

Top 2.5 lakh students from JEE Main qualify for JEE Advanced. There is no direct admission to IITs via JEE Main alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JEE Main 2026 syllabus reduced?

NTA revised the JEE Main syllabus in 2023, removing several Class 11 topics (like Communication Systems, some experimental skills topics). The 2026 syllabus follows this revised pattern. Always verify the official NTA notification at jeemain.nta.ac.in before your preparation.

How many times can you attempt JEE Main?

JEE Main allows a maximum of 3 consecutive years of attempts after Class 12 (or in the year of Class 12). In 2026, this means students who passed Class 12 in 2024, 2025 or 2026 can appear. Each year has two sessions (January and April), so up to 6 attempts total over 3 years.

What is the minimum percentile for NIT admission in JEE Main?

For top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal), the closing rank is typically in the top 5,000–10,000 (around 99+ percentile). For other NITs, a percentile of 95–98 is usually competitive. Exact cutoffs depend on your category, home state and branch chosen — check official JoSAA counselling data.

Which subject is most scoring in JEE Main?

Chemistry is widely considered the most scoring subject in JEE Main because many questions are straightforward NCERT-based facts, especially in Inorganic Chemistry. A student who has thoroughly read NCERT Chemistry can score 90–100% in the inorganic portion with relatively less effort compared to Physics or Maths.
