Course Objective

To develop the ability to critically evaluate a variety of management practices in the contemporary context; to understand and apply a variety of management and organisational theories in practice; and to create sustainable organisations.

Module-wise Syllabus

Module 1

9 contact hours

Introduction to Management: art and science perspectives, external environment, classical/neo-classical/modern management theories, levels of managers and skills required, systems approach. Planning: types of plans — mission, goal, strategy, programme, procedure. Organizing: organization levels and span of control, delegation, organization structures, line and staff concepts.

Module 2

9 contact hours

Leading and Controlling: leading vs managing, dimensions of leadership, leadership behaviour and styles, transactional and transformational leadership, basic control process. Decision Making: steps, decision under certainty/risk/uncertainty, decision trees, EMV method, EOL method, MaxiMin criterion, MiniMax criterion, MiniMax regret criterion.

Module 3

9 contact hours

Project Management: network construction, AON/AOA diagrams, redundancy, CPM and PERT networks, scheduling computations, PERT time estimates, probability of completion, crashing. Human Resource Management: manpower planning, recruitment, selection, placement, training, development, performance management, motivation mechanisms and theories.

Module 4

9 contact hours

Operations Management: concept of productivity and its measurement, forecasting — moving average, weighted moving average. Marketing Management: marketing mix, market segmentation, market targeting and product positioning, product life cycle, marketing strategies for different stages, sales promotion and methods, channels of distribution. Corporate Social Responsibility.
