Course Objective
To introduce modern CAD packages for drafting and modelling of engineering components, and to create a digital mock up of engineering components.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
Part A (minimum 5 exercises): basics of machine drawing — BIS code of practice, types of lines, dimensioning, scales of drawing, sectional views, geometric tolerances, GD&T; simple 2D sketches; rigid shaft couplings (flange coupling, protected flange coupling) using 2D drafting software; 2D assembled drawings with sectional views (universal coupling or knuckle joint; stuffing box with BOM); use of GD&T in drawing.
Module 2
Part B (minimum 7 exercises): creating 3D machine components (minimum 4); 3D assembly models of socket and spigot joint, knuckle joint, rigid flange couplings, bushed pin flexible coupling, plummer block, screw jack; modeling of surfaces (helmet, mouse, automobile fender); parametric modeling of standard parts — nuts, bolts, rivets, washers (minimum 3).
Course Outcomes
- CO1Apply the knowledge of engineering drawings to interpret 2D drawings and model them using software.
- CO2Prepare standard assembly models and drawings of machine components using part drawings.
- CO3Practice GD&T in models as well as drawings.
- CO4Apply parameterisation for the quick modeling of standard parts.
- CO5Model external surfaces of common objects.
