Course Objective

To provide a basic understanding about computer hardware, software, and computer networks; to familiarize the learner with the web development process using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Module-wise Syllabus

Module 1

Minimum 10 experiments: computer hardware familiarization (CPU box, motherboard, CPU & chipset, interface cards, card slots, hard disk, cables, SMPS, NIC, ports); computer peripherals, storage devices, buses, firmware; boot process familiarization; installing Linux and Windows operating systems; basic Unix/Linux commands (ls, mkdir, cp, mv, grep, rmdir, chmod, useradd, passwd, history, dmesg, cpuinfo, uname, du, time, write, fdisk); networking hardware (RJ45, UTP, fibre, switch, NIC, router, WAP, modem); basic networking commands (ifconfig, ping, traceroute, nslookup, ssh, scp, telnet, ftp); viewing network traffic using Wireshark/Packet Tracer; configuring and establishing a network connection; shell programming in Linux (bash); creating and deploying a web page on a local web server; using JavaScript to validate forms; creating an image slider with HTML, CSS and JavaScript; LaTeX basics; development environments (VS Code, Sublime Text, Atom); introduction to repositories (Git/Bitbucket).

Course Outcomes

CO1Experiment with the fundamental hardware components of a computer and how to interface them with software systems.
CO2Make use of the command line of the Linux operating system and shell programming.
CO3Experiment with data network communication scenarios using Wireshark.
CO4Develop basic websites using HTML, CSS & JavaScript and manage the versions.
