Course Objective

To equip students with the principles of quantity surveying, rate analysis and estimation techniques used in civil engineering practice, and to develop the ability to apply valuation methods for assessing the worth of properties.

Module-wise Syllabus

Module 1

9 contact hours

Quantity surveying: purpose and importance, units of measurement, types of estimates, methods of taking out quantities (centre line method, long wall-short wall method, crossing method). Specifications: purpose, general and detailed specifications for common building items.

Module 2

9 contact hours

Rate analysis: purpose, factors affecting rate analysis, CPWD DSR (Delhi Schedule of Rates) and DAR (Detailed Analysis of Rates) — structure and use. Rate analysis for earthwork, concrete, brickwork, plastering and painting.

Module 3

9 contact hours

Detailed estimate preparation for a residential building — earthwork, foundation, superstructure, doors and windows, flooring, roofing, plastering and finishing items. Bar bending schedule (BBS) — purpose, preparation for RCC elements. Estimation of roads — earthwork and pavement quantities.

Module 4

9 contact hours

Valuation: purpose and importance, types of value, factors affecting value, methods of valuation (rental method, direct comparison method, depreciation method, land and building method, profit-based method). Depreciation: causes and methods of calculation. Sinking fund, capitalized value, years' purchase.

Course Outcomes
