Course Objective

To provide students with hands-on experience in testing and analysing soil properties, to learn to evaluate the index and engineering properties of soil, and to equip students with practical skills to conduct soil investigations and interpret geotechnical data.

Module-wise Syllabus

Module 1

Minimum 12 of 15 experiments: sieve analysis; specific gravity (pycnometer and specific gravity bottle); water content (oven drying); free swell test; hydrometer analysis; Atterberg limits (liquid, plastic, shrinkage); field density test (core cutter, sand replacement); light compaction test (standard Proctor); direct shear test; unconfined compression test; consolidation test; permeability test (constant and variable head); triaxial shear strength test; flexible wall permeability test; relative density of cohesionless soil.

Course Outcomes

  • CO1Determine experimentally the index properties of soil.
  • CO2Evaluate experimentally the engineering properties of soil.
  • CO3Analyse the experimental data and document the results.
