Course Objective
To enable experimental evaluation of the properties of materials used for concrete, and to obtain the characteristics of the materials.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
Minimum 12 of 15 experiments: cement tests (fineness, normal consistency, initial/final setting time, specific gravity, compressive strength, soundness); coarse and fine aggregate tests (sieve analysis, water absorption, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, specific gravity, bulking of sand, crushing value); fresh concrete workability (slump cone, compacting factor, Vee-Bee, flow test); concrete mix design by IS code method and casting of cubes/cylinders; hardened concrete properties (compressive/split/flexural strength, modulus of elasticity); brick/floor/roof tile tests per IS code; non-destructive tests (rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebar locator); concrete core cutter, penetrometer and crack detection microscope study.
Course Outcomes
- CO1Describe the basic properties of cement.
- CO2Characterize the physical and mechanical properties of various aggregates.
- CO3Experimentally evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.
- CO4Interpret the quality of various construction materials as per IS Code provisions.
