About Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU)
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), formerly known as University of Pune, is one of the premier universities in Maharashtra, affiliated to 851+ colleges across Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts. It offers programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Commerce, Arts, Management, Law and many other disciplines.
Exam pattern: SPPU follows a semester pattern. Most programmes have 6 or 8 semesters (6 semesters for 3-year programmes like B.Com/BA/BSc; 8 semesters for 4-year programmes like BE/BTech).
Credit system: SPPU uses a credit-based grading system. Subjects are weighted in credits; GPA is calculated on a 10-point scale. Grade points: O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4, F = Fail.
Official syllabus: Available at unipune.ac.in → Academics → Courses and Syllabi.
BE Engineering Syllabus (Affiliated Colleges)
SPPU BE Engineering follows an 8-semester, 4-year structure. It has been revised several times — the latest revision (2019 pattern and 2024 NEP revision) is applicable.
Semester 1 & 2 (First Year Engineering — FE, common for all branches): - Engineering Maths I & II - Engineering Physics I & II - Engineering Chemistry / Basic Electrical Engineering / Basic Electronics - Engineering Mechanics - Basic Programming with C - Engineering Graphics / Drawing
Semester 3 & 4 (Second Year — SE, branch-specific begins): Computer Engineering example: Discrete Mathematics, Digital Electronics, Data Structures, Computer Organisation, Principles of Programming Languages, Theory of Computation.
Semester 5 & 6 (Third Year — TE): Computer Engineering example: Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Computer Networks, Theory of Computation, Software Engineering, Electives (Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, IoT etc.).
Semester 7 & 8 (Final Year — BE): Project (6-month project in Semester 8), elective subjects, Industrial Training. The BE project is a significant assessment — it must include literature survey, design, implementation and viva.

Key Tips for SPPU Students
Pattern changes: SPPU has implemented NEP 2020 revisions phased from 2023 onwards. Students should always download the current semester's syllabus from unipune.ac.in rather than relying on older sources — the syllabus changes with each NEP phase.
Question paper pattern: SPPU end-semester papers typically have: Long answer questions (15–20 marks each), short notes (5–8 marks), objective/multiple choice section (1-mark questions). The distribution varies by programme and subject.
Backlog policy: SPPU allows ATKT (students can carry backlogs and appear for them in subsequent semesters). However, more than 2–3 KTs significantly impacts placement eligibility at many companies visiting SPPU colleges for campus recruitment.
Project in final year: Take the BE/BSc/B.Com final year project seriously — it carries significant marks and is discussed in campus placement interviews. Choose a project with practical implementation, not just theoretical design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find the official SPPU syllabus?
The official Savitribai Phule Pune University syllabus is available at unipune.ac.in. Navigate to Academics → Courses and Syllabi. Select your programme (BE Engineering, B.Com, BA, BSc etc.) and then your branch/subject and semester. Always use this official source rather than third-party websites, as syllabus changes from year to year under NEP implementation.
What is the SPPU grading system?
SPPU uses a 10-point GPA system. Grade points: O (Outstanding) = 10 (75% and above), A+ = 9 (70–74%), A = 8 (60–69%), B+ = 7 (55–59%), B = 6 (50–54%), C = 5 (45–49%), D = 4 (40–44%), F = Fail (below 40%). The semester GPA is called SGPA and the cumulative GPA across all semesters is CGPA. Many employers in Maharashtra ask for CGPA on resumes for SPPU students.
Is SPPU BE equivalent to CBSE/IIT for jobs?
SPPU BE is a recognised engineering degree accepted by all employers in India. For campus placements at top companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Capgemini), SPPU colleges actively participate and get placed. The college's tier matters more than the university — top SPPU colleges (COEP, VJTI Mumbai affiliated, PICT Pune, MIT Pune) have strong placement records. SPPU BE for core engineering (Government PSU jobs, GATE, further education) is fully equivalent to any affiliated university's BE/BTech.
