About VTU Regulation 2022
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) is the affiliating university for engineering colleges in Karnataka, India. VTU introduced Regulation 2022 (also called the 2022 Scheme or CBCS 2022) for students joining from 2022-23, replacing the 2021 Scheme. The new regulation aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, introduces multi-entry/exit options (students can exit with a certificate after 1 year, diploma after 2 years, or degree after 4 years), adds minor degree options and integrates more outcome-based education.
VTU is affiliated to over 200 engineering colleges in Karnataka. Major VTU exam centres are across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Belagavi and Mangaluru.

VTU Exam Pattern and Grading
VTU uses a 100-mark system for each theory subject: 40 marks from Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE — two tests of 20 marks each + assignments) and 60 marks from Semester End Examination (SEE). Passing criterion: minimum 35/60 in SEE and 40/100 aggregate.
Grade scale: O (≥90), A+ (80–89), A (70–79), B+ (60–69), B (55–59), C (50–54), P (40–49), F (fail). SGPA/CGPA out of 10 — a CGPA of 7.5+ is typically required for top placements.
VTU typically holds SEEs in December–January (odd) and May–June (even). Supplementary exams are held for backlogs. VTU is known for strict valuation — students sometimes apply for revaluation (REVAL) for borderline papers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is VTU Regulation 2022 (2022 Scheme)?
VTU Regulation 2022 (also called 2022 Scheme or NEP-aligned scheme) is the latest curriculum framework for students who joined engineering at VTU-affiliated colleges from 2022-23. It follows NEP 2020 with multiple exit options, CBCS (Choice Based Credit System), outcome-based education and enhanced focus on internships and projects.
What is the passing mark in VTU?
To pass a VTU theory subject, students need minimum 35 out of 60 in the Semester End Examination (SEE) and minimum 40 out of 100 (SEE + CIE combined). Failing the SEE by scoring below 35 results in an F grade even if CIE marks are high.
How many backlogs are allowed for campus placement in VTU?
Most companies recruiting at VTU-affiliated colleges require zero active backlogs at the time of interview. Some companies allow up to one backlog during pooled drives. Premium IT companies (FAANG, product companies) typically require zero backlogs and a CGPA above 7.5.
