About Mumbai University

University of Mumbai (MU), established in 1857, is one of the oldest and largest universities in India. It affiliates over 700 colleges across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Major streams: Engineering (affiliated through Maharashtra Institute of Technology's autonomous group and Mumbai University's own affiliated colleges), Commerce (BCom, BMS, BBI, BFM, BAF), Science (BSc), Arts (BA), Law (LLB), Management (MMS).

Mumbai University follows the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) framework aligned with UGC guidelines. Credit system: each semester credits determine the CGPA calculated out of 10.

Engineering (BE) — Key Programmes

Mumbai University offers BE programmes through its affiliated engineering colleges (VJTI, SPCE, Thadomal Shahani, KJ Somaiya, SPIT etc.) and through autonomous institutions that follow their own internal syllabi within MU framework.

First Year (FE) — Common to all branches: Semester 1: Engineering Mathematics I, Engineering Physics I, Engineering Chemistry I, Engineering Mechanics, Professional Communication, Engineering Drawing. Semester 2: Engineering Mathematics II, Engineering Physics II, Engineering Chemistry II, Basic Electrical Engineering, Basic Electronics, Computer Programming.

Computer Engineering (CE/CSE) — Core subjects: Semester 3: Applied Mathematics III, Data Structures, Digital Logic Design, Discrete Structures, Computer Organisation. Semester 4: Applied Mathematics IV, Analysis of Algorithms, Database Management, Operating Systems, Microprocessors. Semester 5: Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Automata Theory, Elective I. Semester 6: Machine Learning, Compiler Design, Information Security, Elective II, Mini Project. Semester 7–8: Electives, Project Phase I & II, Industrial Training.

Mechanical Engineering core: Engineering Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Processes, Fluid Mechanics, Machine Design, Heat Transfer, Automobile Engineering, CAD/CAM. Electrical Engineering core: Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Control Systems, Power Electronics, Signal Processing.

Note: Mumbai University engineering colleges vary significantly — autonomous colleges (like VJTI, SP College) have their own internal syllabi while non-autonomous colleges follow MU's prescribed syllabus.

BCom (Bachelor of Commerce)

BCom is a 3-year, 6-semester degree under Mumbai University. The syllabus was revised to align with NEP 2020 from 2023-24.

For BSc CS/IT: the degree is valued less than a BE from a reputed college but can open doors in IT with strong skills — supplement with industry certifications (AWS, Azure, Python) and projects.

Exam Pattern and Grading

Mumbai University uses a 100-mark structure for most theory papers: 25 marks from College Internal Assessment (CIA — assignments, tests) and 75 marks from the University End Semester Examination (ESE). Passing criterion: 40/100 aggregate with no paper-level minimum (unlike Anna University or VTU).

Grading (CGPA out of 10): O (70–100), A+ (60–69.99), A (55–59.99), B+ (50–54.99), B (45–49.99), C (40–44.99), F (below 40). Improvement in grades is possible through ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) for failed subjects.

Mumbai University exams are held in November–December (odd) and April–May (even). Results are typically declared 2–3 months after exams. Paper revaluation is available at a fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mumbai University engineering good?

Mumbai University-affiliated engineering colleges vary widely in quality. VJTI (Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute) and SP College of Engineering are among the best affiliated colleges. Autonomous colleges under MU (like SPIT, Thadomal Shahani) follow their own curricula and often have better placements. For top engineering careers, the college reputation and autonomous status matter more than MU affiliation itself.

What is the passing mark in Mumbai University?

The minimum passing mark for most Mumbai University programmes is 40 out of 100 (aggregate of internal + external marks). Unlike some other universities, Mumbai University does not have a separate minimum for the end-semester examination — only the aggregate of 40/100 matters. Students who fail can appear under ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) rules.

Which is better — BCom or BMS at Mumbai University?

BMS is generally better for management-oriented careers (MBA, marketing, HR, general management) as it covers broader business subjects. BCom is better if you are combining it with CA or if you specifically want finance/accounting depth. Both degrees from top Mumbai colleges are respected. For an MBA, BMS from a good college slightly edges out BCom due to its management orientation.
