What "Carryover" Actually Means

In KTU's system, a carryover (also called a backlog) is simply a course from an earlier semester that you haven't yet passed — whether from a failed End Semester Exam, not meeting the combined internal-plus-external mark requirement, or missing the exam for a valid or invalid reason. It doesn't block you from continuing your studies outright; instead it sits alongside your current coursework until you clear it in a supplementary attempt.

Why There's a Limit on How Many You Can Carry

KTU caps how many backlogs you can carry while still registering for a later semester. This exists for a practical reason, not just as a bureaucratic rule: past a certain point, trying to simultaneously clear several old backlogs while keeping up with an increasingly demanding current semester becomes genuinely difficult, and the cap forces students to address backlogs before they compound. The exact number varies by scheme year, so this is one detail worth confirming directly from your department rather than assuming it matches a friend's older scheme.

A Realistic Way to Plan Around One Backlog

The most common mistake is treating a backlog paper and the current semester's subjects as equally urgent all the time. A more realistic split:

• In the weeks right after results are declared, give the backlog subject a dedicated, short, high-intensity revision block — while the syllabus is still relatively fresh in memory rather than a full semester old.
• As the supplementary exam date approaches, don't let it silently eat into study time for your current semester's internal assessments — those CIE marks are being earned in real time and can't be made up later the way an ESE can be resat.
• If you're carrying more than one backlog, clear the one with the lightest prior gap first (a subject you narrowly missed) before tackling one you're starting closer to scratch on — an early win reduces the total number you're juggling faster.

It Doesn't Have to Define Your Degree

A large share of engineering students across every Indian university carry at least one backlog at some point — it's common enough that most placement processes and higher studies applications ask about backlog status as a routine field, not as a disqualifying red flag by itself. What tends to matter more to recruiters and universities is whether backlogs are cleared by the time you apply, and whether your overall CGPA trend is improving rather than declining.
