How KTU CGPA and SGPA Are Actually Calculated

SGPA: Your Semester Grade Point Average

SGPA measures a single semester and is calculated as a credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in every course that semester. Each course has a credit value (roughly proportional to its weekly teaching hours) and a grade point (KTU uses a 0-10 scale, with letter grades like S, A+, A, B+ mapping to specific points on your official scheme document). To get SGPA, multiply each course's credits by its grade point, add those up across all courses, then divide by the total credits for the semester.

A Worked Example

Suppose a semester has four courses with these credits and grade points:

Total credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12. Total credits × grade point: 36 + 24 + 21 + 20 = 101. SGPA = 101 ÷ 12 = 8.42. Notice the lab course, despite having only 2 credits, earned the highest grade point — but because it carries fewer credits, it pulls the overall SGPA up less than Course A does. Credit weight matters as much as the grade itself.

CGPA: Why It Isn't Just the Average of Your SGPAs

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) uses the exact same formula — credits × grade point, summed and divided by total credits — but across every course from every semester you've completed so far, not just the current one. If every semester happened to carry identical total credits, averaging your SGPAs would give the same number as this full calculation. In practice, KTU schemes vary total credits slightly semester to semester (electives, mini-projects, labs), so treating CGPA as a plain SGPA average can be off by a small but real amount — enough to matter when a placement drive has a strict cutoff like 7.0 or 7.5 CGPA.

What Actually Moves Your CGPA

Because CGPA weights by credits, a strong grade in a high-credit core course moves your CGPA more than the same grade in a low-credit elective or seminar course. This is worth knowing early: if you're deciding where to invest extra study time in a tight semester, a core theory course with 4 credits is mathematically more valuable to your CGPA than a 1-credit seminar, even if the seminar feels like the easier win. It doesn't mean ignore the seminar — just don't assume every course moves the needle equally.
