Course Objective
To teach students to design and simulate mechanical systems using CAD and FEA software, including mechanisms and structural elements; to enable dynamic simulations and analysis of mechanical systems under various loads, including kinematics, fatigue, and heat transfer; and to introduce fluid dynamics principles and computational tools for analyzing fluid flow.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
8 of 12 exercises are mandatory: dynamic simulation of a four-bar mechanism (coupler curves, velocity/acceleration of follower); design and simulation of a Whitworth quick return mechanism (Coriolis component of acceleration, slider position); structural analysis of an axial bar with varying cross-sections (stress/strain distribution, deformation); structural analysis of a truss (member forces, tension/compression, support reactions); structural analysis of a thin plate under in-plane loads; modal analysis of a cantilever beam; harmonic analysis of a cantilever beam; Eigen-buckling analysis of an I-section column (compared with Euler's formula); fatigue analysis of a Formula SAE hub; steady-state heat conduction in a solid plate; transient heat transfer analysis of a solid fin under natural convection; 2D flow analysis of an airfoil; flow analysis of an air intake manifold (flow separations, recirculation zones).
Course Outcomes
