Course Objective
To familiarize the applications of fluid mechanics and dynamics; to get acquainted with the practical implication of viscous flow and discharge measuring equipment in both closed and open channel flow; and to gain practical experience in handling various hydraulic machines.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
Minimum 10 experiments: coefficient of discharge and calibration of notches, orifice meter and venturi meter; hydraulic coefficients of orifices and mouthpieces (constant and varying head); Chezy's constant and Darcy's coefficient on a pipe friction apparatus; minor losses in pipes; hydraulic ram experiments; Reynolds experiment; Bernoulli's experiment; metacentric height and radius of gyration of floating bodies; performance tests on positive displacement pumps, centrifugal pumps, and gear pumps; performance tests on Pelton and reaction turbines (Francis and Kaplan) with operating characteristics; speed variation test on Pelton turbine.
Course Outcomes
- CO1Apply the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics to understand the flow of fluid through pipes, notches, and associated losses.
- CO2Select a pump/turbine based on given operating conditions and determine the performance of a given turbo machine under various operating conditions.
- CO3Demonstrate the ability to work in groups and present results, and understand the ethical issues with decision making and professional conduct.
