To provide practical experience in the operation and testing of DC machines and transformers.

Module-wise Syllabus

Module 1

Part A — DC Machines: open circuit characteristics of DC shunt generator; load test on DC shunt generator; brake test on DC shunt motor and DC series motor; load test on DC compound generator (cumulative and differential); Swinburne's test on a DC shunt machine; Hopkinson's test on a pair of DC machines; retardation test on a DC machine; separation of losses in a DC shunt motor. Part B — Transformers: OC and SC tests on single-phase transformer; load test on single-phase transformer; separation of losses in a single-phase transformer; Sumpner's test; parallel operation of two dissimilar single-phase transformers; OC and SC tests on 3-phase transformer; Scott connections. A minimum of 12 experiments are mandatory out of the 16 listed.

Course Outcomes

  • CO1Analyze the performance of DC generators by conducting load/no-load tests.
  • CO2Sketch the performance characteristics of DC shunt and series motors.
  • CO3Investigate the losses and efficiency in DC machines by conducting no-load tests.
  • CO4Examine the performance of individual and parallel connected single-phase transformers by conducting load/no-load tests.
  • CO5Determine the voltage regulation and efficiency of a 3-phase transformer by conducting no-load tests.
