Course Objective
To introduce the concepts of electrical measurement systems and instrumentation; to discuss the principles of operation and construction of basic instruments for measuring circuit parameters, magnetic quantities, and passive parameters using bridge circuits, sensors, and transducers; and to introduce modern digital instrumentation systems.
Module-wise Syllabus
Module 1
11 contact hoursFunctional elements of measurement systems — block schematic and brief operation of building blocks. Standards of measurement: static characteristics (accuracy, precision, linearity, resolution), need for calibration, types of errors. Instruments: classification; operating forces and torques — deflecting, controlling and damping torques (gravity and spring control; air, fluid friction and eddy current damping). Measurement of voltage and current: moving coil and moving iron types, range extension using shunts and multipliers.
Module 2
11 contact hoursMagnetic Measurement: flux meter, determination of the B-H curve (hysteresis loop, method of reversal). Measurement of resistance: Wheatstone's bridge, Kelvin's double bridge, loss of charge method, measurement of earth resistance. Measurement of inductance (Maxwell's inductance bridge), capacitance (Schering's bridge), frequency (Wien bridge). Q-meter and LCR meters (description only).
Module 3
11 contact hoursMeasurement of Power and Energy: power measurement using dynamometer type wattmeter, three phase power measurement using the two wattmeter method (phasor diagrams and expressions). Measurement of energy using induction type and two-element energy meters. Instrument transformers — CT and PT (principle of operation, range extension). Basic principles of electronic multimeter, digital voltmeter, digital energy meter, TOD meter, smart metering, bidirectional meters (description only).
Module 4
11 contact hoursBlock schematic of an electronic instrumentation system — role of sensors and transducers. Temperature transducers: thermistors and RTD. Flow transducers: electromagnetic and ultrasonic types. Strain gauge: working principle, types and applications. Measurement of angular speed and luminous intensity. Digital data acquisition systems, signal conditioning systems, phasor measurement unit (block schematic). CRO, DSO and harmonic analyzers (block diagram, basic principles). Virtual instrumentation systems (block schematic). IoT and data analytics for industrial processes — case study on smart grid.
