What an Internship Actually Is

An internship is a temporary, structured work placement — usually a few weeks to a few months — where a student takes on real (if junior-level) tasks inside a company, lab, or organisation, under some form of supervision. It sits between coursework and a full job: more real-world and consequential than a classroom project, but still explicitly framed as learning rather than a permanent role.

Why It Matters More Than Most Coursework Alone

Classroom projects are usually scoped to be solvable within a semester with a known answer. Real work rarely is — requirements change, things break in ways not covered in any textbook, and you have to ask for help or figure things out with incomplete information. That gap between "textbook-solvable" and "actually messy" is exactly what an internship exposes you to, and it's very hard to simulate any other way before your first full-time job.

The Label Matters Less Than the Work

A high-profile company name on a resume catches attention, but interviewers routinely ask follow-up questions that reveal whether the internship involved real, specific work or mostly observation. A smaller company or a professor's research project where you genuinely built, debugged, or shipped something concrete gives you real stories to tell — and real skill — that a big-name internship spent shadowing a team doesn't.

How to Actually Find One

A few approaches that work better than mass-applying to listed postings alone:

• Ask a professor whose research area interests you if they have any small, well-scoped tasks you could help with — many are open to this even without a formal internship program.
• Look at smaller, local companies and startups rather than only large, well-known employers — they often have more flexibility to take on a student and give them real responsibility faster.
• Build something visible first (even a small personal project) — it gives you something concrete to point to and often opens doors that a plain resume alone doesn't.
