Understanding and Managing Exam Anxiety Before Board and Entrance Exams
Some nervousness is normal, even useful — this is about recognising when it isn't, and what practically helps either way.
A Moderate Amount Is Normal, and Even Helpful
Some pre-exam nervousness isn't a sign something is wrong — a moderate level of alertness before a high-stakes exam sharpens focus and reaction time, and most students experience it to some degree. The distinction worth paying attention to is intensity and interference: nervousness becomes a real problem when it starts disrupting sleep, concentration during preparation, or performance during the exam itself, not simply when it's present.
Genuine Preparation Reduces Anxiety More Than Willpower Does
Much of exam anxiety comes from uncertainty — not knowing what to expect, or doubting whether preparation has been enough. Practising under real, timed, exam-like conditions (not just reading notes) directly reduces that uncertainty, because familiarity with the format and genuine confidence in the material both lower the unknowns that anxiety feeds on. Ironically, frantic last-minute cramming right before an exam often increases anxiety, since it signals that something still feels unresolved.
A Simple Technique for the Moments Right Before
Slow, controlled breathing is a genuinely simple, widely used technique that can measurably calm the physical symptoms of acute anxiety — racing heart, shallow breathing — within a couple of minutes. A common pattern is inhaling for a count of four, holding briefly, and exhaling for a longer count (six to eight), repeated a few times. It requires no special preparation and can be done quietly at a desk right before an exam starts.
When It's More Than Normal Nerves
If anxiety is causing significant, ongoing sleep disruption, panic-like physical symptoms, or is affecting daily functioning beyond just the exam period itself, that's a signal worth taking seriously — it's genuinely worth talking to a school counsellor, doctor, or mental health professional rather than trying to manage it alone with general study-skills advice, which isn't designed to address that level of difficulty.
