Percentile vs Percentage vs Rank: What's the Difference?
Three genuinely different numbers, easy to confuse — especially the moment entrance exam results are out.
Percentage: A Measure Against the Total Possible
Percentage is the most straightforward of the three — it's simply the marks you scored out of the total marks available, expressed as a fraction of 100. It says nothing about how anyone else performed; a percentage is entirely about your own answers against the maximum possible score.
Percentile: A Measure Against Everyone Else
Percentile measures your position relative to every other candidate who took that exam. A 99 percentile means you scored higher than 99% of all test-takers — it says nothing directly about your raw percentage, only your relative standing. This is why percentile is especially common for large-scale competitive exams: it naturally accounts for how hard or easy that particular year's paper was, since it's calculated relative to that same group of test-takers.
Rank: An Exact Position, Not a Rounded One
Rank is your precise numerical position among all candidates — rank 1 is the highest scorer, rank 2 the next, and so on, with no rounding or grouping. Percentile, by contrast, is often reported to a limited number of decimal places, which means a large number of candidates with very close (but not identical) actual scores can share the same displayed percentile while still holding meaningfully different exact ranks.
Why This Confusion Causes Real Problems
Students sometimes assume a high percentile guarantees a specific college seat, without realising that with lakhs of candidates, even a 99+ percentile can still correspond to a rank number in the tens of thousands — which matters enormously for competitive seat allocation. Before assuming what a result means for your admission chances, check exactly which of these three figures the specific exam or college you care about actually bases its cutoffs on.
