How to Study for CA, CMA or ACCA While Working Full-Time

Consistency across a protected weekly block beats sporadic weekend marathons — even at the same total hours.

Protect a Fixed Block, Not Leftover Time

The most common mistake working candidates make is treating study time as whatever's left after everything else — which usually means it gets squeezed out entirely on busy weeks. A more reliable approach is blocking a specific, protected time slot (even a modest one, like early mornings or two fixed weeknight sessions) and treating it with the same non-negotiable status as a work meeting, rather than something that flexes around everything else.

Consider Splitting Papers Across Attempts

Many working professionals find that attempting a smaller number of papers per exam cycle — rather than a full group at once — produces a more sustainable pace, even though it extends the overall timeline to qualification. This isn't the right approach for everyone, but it's worth genuinely considering rather than defaulting to a full-group attempt schedule designed more for full-time students than working candidates.

What to Cut When Time Genuinely Runs Short

When work and study time conflict, protect sleep and the study block itself first — both are what actually make the remaining hours productive. Discretionary time (social plans, non-essential extra work, passive downtime) is what should flex first. Cutting sleep to protect study time is a false economy: retention drops enough on insufficient sleep that the extra hours studied often don't translate into proportionally better exam performance.

Talk to Your Employer Early

Many employers, particularly in finance-adjacent roles, are genuinely supportive of staff pursuing CA, CMA or ACCA, sometimes offering exam leave, flexible hours around exam dates, or study support. It's worth raising this conversation early and directly rather than assuming it isn't available — the potential upside generally outweighs the small risk of simply being told no.
