How Campus Placements Actually Work in Indian Engineering Colleges

Before Companies Even Arrive: Eligibility

Most colleges set a baseline CGPA and backlog-status requirement before you're even allowed to register for the placement drive, and individual companies often set their own, sometimes stricter, cutoffs on top of that. This is exactly why CGPA in earlier semesters matters even before placement season starts — falling below a cutoff can mean missing eligibility for specific companies entirely, regardless of how strong your interview skills are.

The Pre-Placement Talk

Most drives start with a short presentation from the visiting company — role details, compensation structure, and what the selection process will look like. It's easy to treat this as a formality, but it's often the only chance to understand what the actual job involves before committing to a lengthy interview process, and questions asked here sometimes get noticed by recruiters.

The Typical Selection Funnel

While it varies by company, a common structure looks like this:

• An online test — usually aptitude, logical reasoning, and for technical roles, coding problems, used to shortlist from a large applicant pool down to a manageable number.
• Technical interview round(s) — questions on core subjects, data structures and algorithms for software roles, or branch-specific fundamentals, plus often a walkthrough of any projects on your resume.
• HR / final round — less about technical depth, more about communication, motivation, and fit; this is also usually where compensation and role details get confirmed.

Why the First Offer Isn't Always the Right One to Take

Many colleges have a "one offer, you're out" or dream-company policy, where accepting an offer (or sometimes just clearing certain rounds) removes your eligibility for later, potentially better-fit companies. This creates a genuine strategic decision early in placement season — whether to accept a solid but not ideal offer, or hold out for a company you're more interested in that's expected later. There's no universally correct answer; it depends on your college's specific policy and your own risk tolerance.
