Two Different Organisations, Two Different Jobs
NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) is a curriculum-development body — it writes the textbooks, designs the syllabus framework, and researches teaching methods. CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) is the examining authority — it sets exam patterns, conducts board exams for Classes 10 and 12, and issues the certificates students actually receive. CBSE builds its curriculum on top of NCERT's framework and textbooks, but the two bodies are structurally separate.
Why This Distinction Actually Matters for Studying
Students preparing for CBSE exams often study "the NCERT textbook" as their primary material, which is generally the right instinct — but the exam itself is designed by CBSE, which publishes its own annual curriculum document, sample papers, and marking schemes that sometimes go beyond what's explicitly written in the textbook. Reading NCERT alone without also practising CBSE's sample papers can leave gaps between what you've read and how CBSE actually expects it to be answered.
NCERT's Reach Beyond CBSE
NCERT textbooks aren't exclusive to CBSE schools. Several state boards adopt NCERT textbooks fully, partially, or as a supplementary reference alongside their own state-specific material. This is part of why NCERT content is often recommended as a strong general foundation even for students outside the CBSE system, particularly for competitive entrance exams like JEE and NEET that draw heavily on NCERT's content and phrasing.
