CBSE Grade Scale for Class 10

CBSE Class 10 uses a grade-based reporting system (since 2010) rather than raw marks for the final result. However, marks are still the basis of internal calculation — grades are derived from marks.

Grade scale (Class 10): - A1: 91–100 marks — Grade Point 10 - A2: 81–90 marks — Grade Point 9 - B1: 71–80 marks — Grade Point 8 - B2: 61–70 marks — Grade Point 7 - C1: 51–60 marks — Grade Point 6 - C2: 41–50 marks — Grade Point 5 - D: 33–40 marks — Grade Point 4 - E1: 21–32 marks — Grade Point (Fail) - E2: 00–20 marks — Grade Point (Fail)

Minimum passing grade: D (33 marks). E1 and E2 grades are failing grades — the student does not pass that subject.

CGPA — What It Is and How to Calculate It

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of grade points earned in all five main subjects in Class 10.

Calculation: CGPA = Sum of Grade Points in 5 main subjects ÷ 5

Example: If a student gets 95 (A1=10), 82 (A2=9), 76 (B1=8), 68 (B2=7) and 54 (C1=6) in 5 subjects: CGPA = (10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6) / 5 = 40 / 5 = 8.0

Which 5 subjects? The 5 main academic subjects are used. Additional or 6th subjects can be used to improve CGPA if they give a higher grade point than one of the main 5 — CBSE allows the best 5 to be counted.

Converting CGPA to approximate percentage: Multiply CGPA × 9.5 Example: CGPA 8.0 × 9.5 = 76% (approximate)

Note: This conversion (×9.5) is CBSE's official formula. It gives an approximation — your actual marks may be slightly different from the conversion. This conversion is used only for reference; the actual mark sheet shows subject-wise grades and CGPA.

CBSE Class 12 Marking Scheme

Class 12 is different from Class 10 — CBSE Class 12 results are reported in actual marks (not grades) for all purposes including college admissions.

Subjects: Usually 5–6 subjects. 4 compulsory + 1–2 optional. Total marks: 500 (100 per subject × 5 main subjects).

Marks per subject: 80 marks theory + 20 marks internal = 100 marks total per subject.

Class 12 grade equivalents (for reference — marks are what actually appear on marksheet): - 91–100: A1 (Exceptional) - 81–90: A2 (Excellent) - 71–80: B1 (Very Good) - 61–70: B2 (Good) - 51–60: C1 (Average) - 41–50: C2 (Below Average) - 33–40: D (Satisfactory — Pass) - Below 33: Fail

Class 12 percentage calculation: Aggregate percentage = (Total marks in best 5 subjects / 500) × 100 Most colleges use percentage, not grade points, for Class 12 admission cutoffs.

What Does Your CGPA Mean for College Admissions?

Class 10 CGPA is used for: - Admission to Class 11 at CBSE schools (most schools require a minimum CGPA or specific subject grades) - Some junior college/Class 11 admissions use Class 10 percentage - State government scholarship eligibility criteria - Some competitive exam eligibility (e.g., NTSE requires 60%+ in Class 10)

Class 10 is typically NOT used for: - Engineering college admissions (uses JEE/Class 12 marks) - Medical college admissions (uses NEET/Class 12 marks) - Arts/Commerce college admissions (uses Class 12 marks)

Note for Class 11 admission: If your CBSE Class 10 result shows CGPA 7.0, this means approximately 66.5% (×9.5) which translates to roughly B2 grade average. Schools requiring 60%+ minimum will accept this, schools requiring 70%+ may not. Convert CGPA to approximate percentage when checking admission requirements.

Common Questions About CBSE Grading

Does CBSE still use the CGPA system? As of 2024-25, CBSE Class 10 results are reported with CGPA on the marksheet, alongside subject-wise grades. However, Class 12 results continue to show actual marks and percentage — the grade system is primarily a Class 10 feature.

What is 'pass mark' in CBSE? The minimum passing mark in CBSE is 33% — which corresponds to 33 marks out of 100 (or 26.4 out of 80 in the theory component). Students must pass each subject individually — passing in aggregate alone is not sufficient.

Compartment exam: Students who fail in 1 or 2 subjects (get E1/E2 grade) are eligible for a compartment examination conducted in July. Passing the compartment exam results in a full pass. If 3 or more subjects are failed, the student must repeat the year.

Improvement exam: Class 12 students who pass but want to improve their marks can appear in the CBSE improvement examination the following year. This can improve your percentage for college admissions if you are on the boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good CGPA in CBSE Class 10?

A CGPA of 9.0–10.0 is considered excellent (90%+, A1/A2 average). CGPA 8.0–8.9 is very good (76%–85%, B1/A2 range). CGPA 7.0–7.9 is good (66%–75%). CGPA 6.0–6.9 is average (57%–66%). For admission to good Class 11 Science streams or competitive junior colleges, most students need CGPA 8.0 or above. For state scholarships and NTSE, 60%+ equivalent (CGPA 6.3+) is typically the cutoff.

How do I convert my CBSE CGPA to percentage?

CBSE's official formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So CGPA 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8% approximately. This is a statistical average derived by CBSE and is not exact — it is an approximation. Your actual subject marks may give a different percentage. When applying to colleges that ask for 'Class 10 percentage', use this formula unless you have the actual mark sheet showing percentage directly.

Does Class 10 CGPA matter for engineering or medical admissions?

For JEE (engineering) and NEET (medical), Class 10 CGPA has no direct role in the entrance exam or merit list. Some states require Class 10 proof for eligibility verification, but the admission decision is based entirely on JEE/NEET score and Class 12 marks. Class 10 matters for Class 11 admission (stream selection) and certain government scholarships. Focus your effort on Class 11 and 12 performance for competitive entrance exam outcomes.
