CBSE Class 12 Exam Overview

CBSE Class 12 board exams (AISSCE) are conducted in February–March. Each theory paper is 80 marks external + 20 marks internal assessment (Periodic Tests, Project, Practical/Assignment). Passing criterion: minimum 33 out of 100 aggregate in each subject.

From 2023-24 onwards, CBSE has increased competency-based questions to 40–50% of theory papers — case studies, application-based MCQs and assertion-reason questions. Pure factual recall is less rewarded than understanding and application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which subject has the most marks in CBSE Class 12 Science?

Physics has the highest external marks (80) tied with Chemistry, Biology and Maths — all are 80 marks external + 20 internal = 100 marks each. However, Mathematics (especially Calculus — 44 marks) and Chemistry (Organic Chemistry sections) are considered the hardest in terms of scoring for average students. Biology is the easiest to score in Class 12 Science for consistent readers.

Is Class 11 syllabus included in Class 12 CBSE boards?

CBSE Class 12 board papers test only Class 12 syllabus. However, Class 11 concepts are prerequisites — you cannot solve Class 12 Physics or Chemistry without Class 11 foundations. For NEET, both Class 11 and Class 12 Biology, Physics and Chemistry are explicitly in the syllabus. For JEE, both years are in scope.

When does CBSE Class 12 board exam take place?

CBSE Class 12 board exams are typically held in February–March. Practical exams are in January–February. Results are usually declared in May. The datesheet is released on cbse.gov.in in December–January of the exam year.
